Chronic Pain Patients
I was hit by a car 15 years ago and tried every western approach imaginable to manage my pain and was soon desperate. I felt like I had exhausted everything my doctors recommended but was still suffering on a daily basis. I felt like I was on a treadmill to nowhere.
Then I was introduced to the many alternative approaches that are available and have used imagery, accupuncture, massage, and weight training to help me reclaim my health, not overnight, but with a slow, dedicated approach and an open mind.
I still have pain, but no longer feel in the grips of such an unmanageable disease. My confidence builds with every passing day and I now have the tools to help myself on an ongoing basis.
These alternative methods have definitely helped me rework my approach and my day-to-day outlook on what is possible. A year ago, I never thought I would make it through a day without my medication - now I am dealing with my life medication-free one day at a time.

Modern medical treatments were successful in the 'black and white'treatment of my injuries. But in order to expand my bodies abilities to heal, I tried several alternative treatments that allowed me to add to the surgeries, medication and 'regular'treatments with a much more productive outcome.
The body is an incredible self-healing "machine". Alternative health methods help an individual learn to use mind and body together toward so many difficult and chronic issues.

Healing is an integrative process that best happens when a person's own creative power engages with his or her medical therapies."

I had a dream - running a marathon - before I ran my first marathon. I knew I would complete it, because I did in my dream! I understand this more now that I have read the book: Your Body, Your Mind & Their Link to Your Health. What a great book ... very educational ... and important for the task of empowering a person to take next step ... which is to help themselves!

As a Registered Nurse I have utilized complementary/alternative therapies for many years in order to maximize my innate self-healing capacity and avoid invasive procedures and medications which often produce negative effects/outcomes.
Faced with a stress induced health challenge 10 years ago I did not wish to merely treat symptoms and feel better quickly; I wanted to get at the root cause of my dis-ease even if it meant prolonged discomfort, cost out of pocket and extended time off from work.
I chose to see my situation as an opportunity to grow through rather than just get through and return to business as usual.
As a Holistic Nurse I now intellectually understand what I then intuitively knew to be the best course of action for me. Health is a state of balance. I was severely out of balance at and between the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels of my being as well as in my relationships. Through many alternative therapies, self-exploration and immersion in the principles and practices of Ayurveda, an ancient and natural healing system from India, I began a journey which restored my health; body, mind and spirit and transformed my life.
Critical to my recovery has been my courage to take an honest and compassionate look at and change the beliefs and choices that did not serve me and accept the abiding love and support of my family and friends.

Cancer Patients
When I first received all the guided imagery sessions of the Cancer Involvement Program, I was overwhelmed by it all. But then once I understood what it was and tried it, I found that I quickly got attached to it. Before long I found myself thinking ... 'Why did I wait this long?!'
I was introduced to guided imagery about two months into treatment, but I wish every newly diagnosed individual could add this to their treatment, for then helpful positive images can be encouraged within them too.
It helped for me to believe that I had a chance. I would want anyone out there with cancer to know that as long as you have hope and determination to live
then don't give up!

When I had breast cancer over 4 years ago, guided imagery was able to put me in touch with that place deep inside where I just 'knew' I was healthy!
Guided imagery helped me to manage the emotions of anxiety & depression, brought on by the cancer diagnosis; while also helping me to manage the many physical symptoms like pain & fatique. The addition of chiropractic and chinese medicine even helped me to cleanse my system of the toxicity that was brought on by the medical treatments themselves.
Whenever the imagery took my body to a deep state of relaxation, I felt that my own natural healing system could become fully engaged and allow my immune system to function as optimally as possible.
Each of the alternative methods I chose, so gentle and nurturing, always helped to put my body into a state that was receptive to healing. They empowered me by giving me areas where I was able to feel in charge and in direct control of my care.
... and I was able to actually lean on those times spent with guided imagery whenever my body was feeling at its worst.
